Synopsis

This finalist for the 2004 Man-Booker prize contains six stories from different times which seem separate, but which are ultimately related in various ways. The stories are

1) An american man is on a boat in the south pacific on his way back to california in 1850.

2) An aspiring young british composer with no money becomes apprentice to an famous old blind composer.

3) A young journalist in mid 1970s california stumbles upon a possible cover-up at a nuclear power company.

4) A publisher in britain finds one of his books become popular, only to be put in a precarious situation with some thugs looking for money.

5) A genetically engineered woman is interviewed on death row in a future world which seems similar to something from A Brave New World.

6) A young man in post-apocolyptic hawaii has his life changed by the visit of a woman from another tribe who seems to know much more about the world than she lets on.

Each story is presented in order, and then cascades back until the book ends with the first story. Thus, the order is 1 2 3 4 5 6 5 4 3 2 1.

ScottYilek: Very good book that's masterfully written. I doubt any writer today has the imagination of Mr. Mitchell. Each story has its own writing style, and each one is equally effective. (added at 01:02:12 PM on 02/23/06)
