ddjiii: There are very few books written by westerners about living in China that convey the experience to my satisfaction. Some never get over the "exotic" in their heads, and others seem to be a litany of complaints or cruel jokes about how backward and strange life there seems to them. Salzman does not avoid the poverty and petty bureaucracy of what was then a thoroughly socialist country, but he manages to make the place, people and all his experiences seem fresh and real.
