ddjiii: Brilliant writing. I don't care at all about horse racing, but this is a much larger story. During the description of the climactic race with the eastern champion War Admiral, my heart was pounding as if I were standing at the rail. (added at 10:38:47 PM on 02/15/06)
DanFr: Truly an amazing story. It has the classic elements: a horse who refuses to be "broken", who trainers think has a funny gait and will never amount to much, taken to glory by a trainer who believes and a jockey who understands. Also insightful are the descriptions of the role of horse-racing in early 20th century American life, as well as the insane life of jockeys. For example: they would bury themselves in huge piles of steaming horse manure to sweat off weight. (added at 06:24:06 PM on 12/22/06)
