Camus of course is a philosopher first and a novelist second, a dangerous combination. But the Plague is such a lucid demonstration and is told so plainly that it doesn't suffer from being a vehicle for big questions, in this case "how do you find meaning in an unfair and capricious world?" Its reputation as a depressing and cynical book is completely false and must come from reading the dust jacket; I found it both hopeful and heroic.
