Creating a New Category
At this point in the tutorial, we start to get into more involved WikiLens stuff. If you are happy rating things and creating new items, you can stop here. If you want to get down and dirty, feel free to continue!
How do I create a new category?
Since each category is listed on the left side of every page, we're probably not going to create categories very often on wikilens.org. Still, since it's a wiki, you should feel free! Also, if you are running your own WikiLens you might want to do this.
The easiest way it to go to the Home page and click the link CreateCategory. This link will strongly urge you to search before creating the new category ... but you don't have to if you don't feel like it. Just type in the name and press enter ... and the new category is created. You will be put on the category page, from which you can add as many pages to the new category as you wish.
Categories are usually best if they're named after singletons of the item type they represent. For instance, "Book", "Restaurant" and "Sailboat" are good category names. WikiLens will occasionally try to pluralize them in context by adding an "s", so you might want to think about how weird that's going to sound.
How do I add my new category to the home page?
Edit the home page. Look for the list of categories in the "ListPages" plugin. There is a pages= keyword followed by a list of categories inside quotes. Separate the categories with commas, but include no extra spaces. Save the home page, and you should see your new categories listed!
Note that you do not have to add categories to the home page if you don't want to. You can always find them by searching, or link to them in some other way. Often it's handy to have them on the home page, though.
The WikiLens theme includes a list of all categories on the left hand side. This list is generated by finding all pages that include a link to [Category] somewhere in them (note the square brackets). You may wish to include [Category] in your newly created pages.
Also, if the page had already been created by other means, you have to change its category to "Category" by clicking on the "Change this item's category" button.
