Viewing the Wiki

Basic Navigation

When you start at the Home page of a WikiLens Wiki you will usually see a list of Categories of things that Wiki can recommend to you. The Categories have been set up by other users. Hint: every page of a wiki includes a link back to the Home page. Choose a category and click on it.

Now you're looking at a category page. A category page contains a list of pages that are in that category. Click on one of them to see what is in the item. Use the back button or the HomePage button to get back to the list of categories.

How do I ask questions?

Just edit them into the appropriate place in this document, and wait for someone to answer them!

Searching

Every page of a wiki will have a search box somewhere. You can type any text into the search box, and the wiki will look for pages containing that text. (Actually, there are different types of searches: some search for text in the title of the pages, and some search for text anywhere on the page. Just try to search for what you want. If it doesn't work the wiki will bring you to a page with three search options: title search, full text search, and fuzzy search. Fuzzy search is like full text search except that it looks for words that are close to the ones you typed. It's great if you or someone else who uses the wiki is a lousy speller.)

RecentChanges

Expert wiki users will often check the RecentChanges every time they visit the wiki. This is a way to keep track of what other users have been up to while you've been gone.

You can sign up to receive email every time the wiki changes by editing your Preferences. (Remember: the link to the preferences page will appear in the upper right once you sign in. The next section described how to create a login.) If you want email every time every page in the wiki changes, just put * in the box labelled "Get an email notification at changes of the following pages". * means all pages on the wiki, which may be quite a few if it's a big public wiki. You can enter the names of specific pages if you know which ones you're watching.
